Waves are laid down curls that can be obtained from frequent brushing/combing of short hair daily over a period of time.
The process of waving involves a couple of routines and products that should be adopted if one wants to get the best-looking waves possible. These routines don't only create waves, but help maintain your waves, giving your hair a fresh, healthy and mesmerizing look. Waves aren't just a hairstyle, but a lifestyle.
To start with, one has to get a trim. Ideally , as a waver you should be getting a haircut at 2cm length with the grain.(if you aren't too familiar with this, ask your barber to use check the guard- the plastic piece that is placed on top of the barbering machine for the 2cm type and use it)
During this haircut, let your barber help you identify your crown- a small area normally located at the center of head where your hair starts growing from. Identifying this will help you easily create an ideal brush pattern for 360, 540 or 720 waves. Haircuts should be done every 4-6 weeks in order to facilitate progress with your waves by allowing you to wolf.
Morning routine: A fresh morning should start with waking up with your silk durag /wave cap, taking it off and brushing for about 5 minutes with your soft wave brush. After which you can go about your regular morning activities.
However, when you are taking a shower, here are some changes you would have to make:

  • Don't wet your hair or scrub your hair, ideally you could use a shower cap or just direct your hair away from the shower.
  • After taking a shower, you may wet your hair slightly then apply a coin- shaped amount of your wave pomade in the pattern you want your waves to form.
  • Next, take your medium brush and brush for at least 15 minutes. After which you should brush for at least 5 minutes with a soft brush to lay down your waves.
  • If your hair is very low or you just had a haircut, focus on using a soft brush for your brush sessions
  • After brushing, you may use a plastic bag or lay down pad to smoothen out your waves, after which you wear your silk  durag for about 15 minutes to lay down your waves.
  • You can then take it off and start your day.

Evening Routine: After a long and stressful day at work or school, get ready to treat your hair to the best of conditioning. Similar, to the morning routine , you'll have to follow a series of processes. Fortunately, these are not any much different from the morning routine. These are the differences:

  • After taking your shower, dedicate more time to brushing your hair, ideally you should spend at least 30 minutes brushing- 20 minutes with your medium brush then 10 minutes with your soft brush.
  • After brushing, you would need to tie your silk durag at least 15 minutes, replace it with your wave cap or wear it to sleep.
  •  When going to sleep , make sure that the silk durag is well tied so it doesn't fall off. A wave cap is much more suited for sleeping with due to its elastic band so take advantage of it once you have it. A wave cap can be worn exclusively or together with a silk durag for extra compression and security

Wash and Style: The fundamental purpose of the wash and style procedure is to keep your 360  waves intact and neat without overbrushing. This approach will play a crucial role in helping you make the desired progress more quickly and effectively. Every single elite waver in the game uses it, and it leaves your hair healthy and clean while also aiding in wave pattern training.

Wash and style also serves as the primary method wavers clean their hair and is is absolutely necessary to keep the hair clear of dirt and product buildup.

Wash and style should be done a maximum of twice a week using products such as a shampoo bar, durag(preferably polyester mesh or silk), medium brush, soft brush, wave pomade, comb, detangling brush, oil, conditioner.

There are many ways to go about a wash and style and many products can be used.

NB: Always make sure you wash all the shampoo out of your hair after a wash and style unless indicated that the shampoo is a leave-in shampoo.
